What Does a New Roof Cost in Texas in 2026?

A straight-talking look at what a roof replacement really costs in Central Texas in 2026, what drives the price, and how storm insurance can bring your out of pocket cost down to your deductible.

If you own a home in Central Texas, a new roof is one of the bigger bills you will ever face. So it makes sense to know the numbers before you get a knock on the door. Here is an honest breakdown of what a roof replacement really costs around Killeen in 2026, what moves the price up or down, and how insurance can change the whole picture.

No sales talk here. Just the truth as we see it from the ground.

The short answer on cost

Most residential roof replacements in Central Texas land somewhere between $8,000 and $18,000 or more. That is a wide range, and it should be. A small ranch home in Copperas Cove and a big two-story in Georgetown are not the same job.

To put rough shape on it, a smaller, simple roof often sits near the lower end. A large home, a steep roof, or an upgrade to a premium material can push you toward the top of the range or past it. The final number depends on a few things you can measure and a few things you cannot see until the old roof comes off. That second part matters, and we will get to it.

What drives the price

Here are the main things that push your number up or down.

  • Size. Roofs are priced by the square, which is a 10 by 10 foot area, so 100 square feet. A bigger roof means more material and more labor. Most homes fall between 15 and 30 squares.
  • Pitch. A steep roof is slower and harder to work on safely. Steeper usually means more, because the crew moves carefully and needs more safety gear.
  • The roofing system. A basic three-tab shingle costs less than a heavier architectural shingle. Metal costs more again. Better systems often last longer, so the cheaper option is not always the cheaper choice over time.
  • Layers and tear-off. Some crews shingle right over the old roof. We do not. We do a full tear-off down to the decking every time. It costs a little more up front, and it is the honest way to do it.
  • What is under the shingles. Once the old roof is off, we inspect the decking. If the wood is soft or rotted, it has to be replaced. That is the part nobody can quote for sure from the driveway.
  • The extras that come with the roof. Vents, flashing around chimneys and walls, drip edge, and underlayment all add up. Gutters and skylights are their own line items. A quote that ignores these is not a real quote.

That decking point is why a good contractor gives you a solid estimate, not a magic exact number over the phone.

A quick look at shingle choices

The shingle you pick is one of the few price levers you actually control. Here is the plain version.

  • Three-tab shingles. The budget option. Flat look, thinner, and a shorter life. They cost the least up front.
  • Architectural shingles. The most common choice today. Thicker, layered, and better looking, with a longer life and a stronger wind rating. They cost a bit more and are worth it for most homes here.
  • Metal. The most expensive of the three to install. It lasts far longer and stands up well to heat and hail. It makes sense for owners who plan to stay in the home for decades.

For most Central Texas homes, a quality architectural shingle is the sweet spot between price and life. We will walk you through the trade-offs for your specific roof, not push you toward the priciest option.

The stuff a low bid often leaves out

A cheap price sometimes means corners are getting cut. When you compare quotes, look for the small things that protect your home and your wallet.

At OSAAT, the price includes the work most people never think about. Driveway tarps so nothing crushes your concrete. Magnetic nail sweeps across the front and back yard so nobody picks up a nail in a tire or a foot. Photo and video documentation at every stage, so you can see what you paid for. And a full decking inspection, not a guess.

You also get a named point of contact. Not a call center. One of us, Christopher or Richard, is on every job. When you have a question, you talk to a person who was actually on your roof.

When you line up two quotes, do not just compare the bottom number. Compare what each one includes. The cheaper bid is often cheaper because it left something out, and that something usually lands back on you later.

How insurance changes the math

Here is where a lot of Texas homeowners get a pleasant surprise. If your roof was damaged by a storm, hail, or wind, your homeowners insurance may cover most of the replacement. In that case your out of pocket cost can come down to your deductible.

This matters more here than in most places. Texas sees more damaging hail than almost any other state, year after year, according to NOAA Storm Events data. A lot of the roofs we replace are storm claims, not out-of-pocket jobs.

The catch is that the claim has to be handled right. We meet the insurance adjuster on site, walk the roof with them, and make sure the real damage gets seen. If the first offer misses something, we file a supplement to fight for what the job actually needs. The documentation we take at every stage helps back all of that up.

We are not going to promise your claim will get approved. Nobody honest can. But having someone in your corner who knows the process makes a real difference.

Ways to make it easier to pay

A roof is a big number, and not everyone has it sitting in the bank. A few things can help.

  • Financing through Hearth. Rates as low as 0 percent, with payments starting around $97 a month. It spreads the cost so you are not draining your savings.
  • Military and first responder discounts. We are proud to serve the folks around Fort Cavazos. If you are active or retired military, or a first responder, we take care of you on price.
  • Referral rewards. If you send a neighbor our way, there is a reward in it for you.

Between insurance, financing, and a discount, the out of pocket number is often smaller than people expect when they first start worrying about it.

A word on doing it right

We are a young company, founded in 2025, and we will be straight with you about that. But the owners have years of roofing experience, and our crews carry 15 plus years. We back our work with an in-house workmanship warranty, and if you sell your home, that warranty transfers to the new owner.

We serve Central Texas only. Killeen, Copperas Cove, Nolanville, Belton, Temple, Harker Heights, Georgetown, Salado, Leander, and Lampasas. This is home for us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will insurance pay for my whole roof?

If a storm caused the damage, your policy may cover the replacement minus your deductible. It depends on your coverage and whether the damage is clear. We meet your adjuster on-site to make sure the real damage gets counted, but no honest contractor can promise an approval.

How much is the deductible on a roof claim?

That depends on your policy, not on us. Many Texas homeowners have a wind and hail deductible set as a percentage of the home’s insured value, which can be higher than a flat dollar deductible. Check your policy or ask your agent so there are no surprises.

Why do roof quotes vary so much?

Size, pitch, shingle choice, and what the crew includes all move the number. A low bid often leaves out tear-off, decking repair, or clean-up, and that cost comes back to you later. Compare what each quote includes, not just the bottom line.

Can I finance a new roof?

Yes. We offer financing through Hearth with rates as low as 0 percent and payments starting around $97 a month. It lets you get the roof done now and spread the cost instead of draining your savings.

Do you charge for an estimate?

No. The inspection and the estimate are free, with no obligation. We get on the roof, document what we find with photos, and give you honest numbers. What you do after that is up to you.
